Martina Navratilova

Biographie

Martina Navrátilová est née le 18 octobre 1956 à Prague en ex-Tchécoslovaquie. Ancienne joueuse de tennis Numéro 1 Mondiale,  elle fut qualifiée par Billie Jean King en 2006, l’année où elle prit sa retraite de « meilleure joueuse de simple, double et mixe double encore en vie. »

Née Martina Šubertová, ses parents divorcent quand elle n’a que trois ans. En 1962, sa mère se remarie avec Miroslav Navrátil qui devient son premier professeur de tennis. Martina prend peu après le nom de famille de son beau-père et y ajoute le suffixe féminin « ová ».

En 1972, à l’âge de 15 ans, Martina remporte le championnat national tchécoslovaque de tennis. En 1973, elle fait ses débuts dans le circuit mais ne devient professionnel qu’en 1975. Elle remporte son premier titre professionnel en simple à Orlando en 1974 à l’âge de 17 ans. A son arrivée aux Etats-Unis elle vit tout d’abord avec l’actrice Frances Dewey Wormser et son époux Morton Wormser, passionné de tennis.

La jeune Martina Navrátilová enchaîne ensuite les tournois avec plus ou moins de réussite mais séduit les journalistes par sa puissance et son jeu agressif. En 1975, après sa défaite contre Chris Evert lors de la finale du championnat français, elle se rend au service d’immigration et de naturalisation à New York à l’âge de 18 ans et demande à changer de nationalité. Moins d’un mois plus tard elle obtient sa green card.

A partir de ce moment là, Martina Navrátilová domine sur les cours de tennis et fait preuve d’une régularité et d’une importante maîtrise. Elle gagne de nombreux et importants tournois. Durant sa longue carrière, elle remporte 167 titres en simple et 177 titres en double. Le 05 Juillet 2006, Martina Navrátilová annonce finalement après le tournoi de Wimbledon qu’elle quitte le circuit professionnel.

Depuis ce jour, elle se consacre à la défense des droits LGBT et fut même la première porte-parole des Outgames en 2006. En 2008, trente trois années après été déchue de sa nationalité tchécoslovaque suite à son départ pour les Etats-Unis, elle demande à obtenir la nationalité tchèque pour montrer son désaccord avec la politique menée par George W. Bush.

Histoire d'un Coming-Out

Dans son autobiographie simplement intitulée Being Myself (Être Moi-Même), Martina Navrátilová a déclaré être tombée amoureuse de ses professeurs masculins et féminins lorsqu’elle était enfant. Ce n’est qu’ensuite qu’elle s’est sentie fortement attirée par les joueuses de tennis du même sexe. Elle n’a pris conscience de la signification de cette attirance qu’à l’âge de 18 ans quand elle a eu sa première expérience sexuelle.

Lorsqu’elle fait part de son homosexualité à ses parents, ceux-ci sont choqués. Son père est le plus virulent et déclare qu’il s’agit d’une « maladie » allant jusqu’à lui expliquer qu’il aurait préféré qu’elle soit une prostituée.

Même si elle a conscience d’être lesbienne depuis ses 18 ans, Martina Navrátilová ne l’a jamais caché mais n’en a pas non plus fait la publicité. En 1980, elle part vivre en Virginie avec Rita Mae Brown une romancière féministe lesbienne connue. A ses côtés, Martina développe son goût pour la littérature et son humour. Pourtant, elle se lasse rapidement des fêtes et des sorties où elle se retrouve souvent à l’écart. De plus les journaux commencent à s’intéresser à la relation qui unit les deux jeunes femmes. Poursuivies par les paparazzi, elles perdent leur intimité et le jeu de Martina en souffre. Leur relation se termine de manière dramatique et toutes les deux en viennent même aux coups.

En 1981, Martina vit avec Nancy Lieberman, une joueuse de basket. Cette dernière devient son nouvel entraîneur et le résultat est rapidement visible. Mais cette année là, le scandale arrive du côté de Billie Jean King qui admet ouvertement sa bisexualité. Les journalistes, heureux de cette nouvelle harcèlent à nouveau Martina pour savoir si elle est lesbienne. Mais la joueuse de tennis refuse de répondre par crainte de voir sa demande de visa rejetée. En effet, il ne faut pas oublier que l’homosexualité est un crime dans plusieurs états américains.

Mais fin 1981, peu de temps après avoir été nationalisée citoyenne américaine, Martina Navrátilová déclare finalement publiquement qu’elle est lesbienne. Elle vit une longue relation avec Judy Nelson entre 1983 et 1991. Toutes les deux finissent par se séparer en 1991 dans une bataille juridique très médiatisée.

Depuis son coming-out public, Martina Navrátilová est devenue porte-parole des droits LGBT. Elle a également créée la “Martina Navratilova Youth Foundation” qui s’occupe de jeunes en difficultés.
